Most teas are harvested by the handful. Silver Tips are collected bud by bud, before dawn, when the dew is still on the leaf. It is one of the rarest teas Ceylon produces — and one of the most misunderstood.
What Makes Silver Tips Different
Silver Tips is a white tea made exclusively from the unopened leaf bud of the Camellia sinensis plant. The bud is plucked before it unfurls, dried gently without oxidation, and left almost entirely unprocessed. The result is a tea that is naturally low in caffeine, extraordinarily delicate in flavour, and visually striking — long silver-white needles that unfurl slowly in the cup.
Ceylon's Silver Tips are grown at high elevations in Nuwara Eliya and Dimbula, where cool mist and slow growth concentrate the natural sweetness in each bud. The harvest window is narrow: only a few weeks a year, in the finest weather, when the bushes are at their most tender.
How It Tastes
Expect a pale golden liquor with a clean, honeyed sweetness and a faint floral note — sometimes described as white peach or fresh hay. There is no bitterness, no astringency. It is the quietest cup in the tea world, and that restraint is the point.
How to Brew Silver Tips Properly
- Use water at 75–80°C — never boiling. Boiling water will scorch the delicate buds and flatten the flavour.
- Use 2 teaspoons per 200ml. The buds are light and airy; you need more leaf by volume than you would with a black tea.
- Steep for 3–4 minutes. Longer steeps deepen the sweetness without turning bitter.
- Re-steep up to 3 times. Each infusion reveals a slightly different character — the second steep is often the most expressive.
- Drink it plain. Milk, sugar and lemon all overpower what you are paying for.
