Ceylon Black Tea and Caffeine: What's Really in Your Morning Cup
Share
For millions of people the day doesn't start until the first cup of strong black tea. Here's what's actually in that cup — and how to brew it to suit you.
How much caffeine is in Ceylon black tea?
A typical cup of Ceylon black tea contains roughly 40–70 mg of caffeine, compared with about 90–120 mg in a mug of brewed coffee. The exact number depends on three things you control:
- Leaf grade. Smaller broken grades like BOPF infuse faster and more completely than whole-leaf OP, so the same steep time yields a stronger cup.
- Steep time. Three minutes gives a moderate cup; five minutes pulls out noticeably more strength and body.
- Leaf quantity. Teh tarik strength starts at two heaped teaspoons per cup.
Want it stronger or softer?
For a bolder cup, choose BOPF Strong Ceylon, steep 4–5 minutes and take it with milk — the classic teh Ceylon approach. For something gentler, brew whole-leaf OP for 3 minutes, or switch the afternoon cup to Ceylon green tea, which brews lighter at lower temperatures.
The ritual is the point
However you take it, a deliberate morning cup — measured leaf, proper steep, a quiet minute before the day begins — is a small ceremony that never gets old. Coffee drinkers looking to bridge both worlds should try the dirty chai: spiced Ceylon chai with a shot of espresso.
